Who Is The Doctor

A little scribble to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. No, not all the Doctors are there - I doodled whichever inspired me most at the time.

Just a quickish thing I drew on an online art application t'other day. Unfortunately the brushes didn't always 'stroke' properly with my mouse, so some lines aren't so merged in as I might have liked. I didn't want to spend ages on this and so it is what it is - a just for fun 'speedpaint'. :)

More big cats!

As a recap: went to a workshop last year by wildlife artist Frances Whitman. Started this during the day and worked on it a little after, posting it on this blog. Now, quite a while after, I have finally been able to colour the eyes, from owning a few more of the necessary coloured pencils. The colours weren't all quite right, but with what I have I think it's passable. Thought I ought to post the update here again. It's nice to have achieved that extra little thing.

We had also started a Snow Leopard picture, too, and I don't think I posted it last time. The picture will need more time for me to finish it. With this kind of pencil work, to be fair, slow and steady wins the race...

Now those are special colouring pencils, but I've found that I can still get somewhere with 'bog-standard' coloured pencils, too - and felt tips - with which I have been doing more experimenting. Still focusing primarily on traditional mediums at the moment.

Leopard King

As you can see in the photo below this, 'Leopard King' was one of the pictures I displayed at the exhibition. I decided the other day I would like to colour it on the computer, and so I did.

The idea for this originally came from me wanting to draw an animal dressed like a monarch. At first I wanted to draw an elephant; however this gradually changed to a leopard. I looked at a portrait of King George VI on a postcard for reference and inspiration and I must stress making a kind of leopard version of him is suggesting nothing of his character - merely a random choice!

Exhibition Of Imagination

So a few days ago I took part in a local exhibition for local and 'amateur' artists. I thought it would be fun to take part in something like that again, as the last time some of my artwork was exhibited was at university. (I'd like to think I've developed a little since then!) A lot of preparation was put in for the one-day event and it went well enough. A small area, but it was very interesting to see the range of work! I thought my kind of work would look out of place at such an art exhibition. Perhaps not everyone 'got it' amongst the more obvious kind of art. However, I think the difference might have helped bring the pictures out more. The event was rather encouraging and a few other artists gave some advice; plus I won a gift card and free pass to a gallery for, I think, creating the 'best art that was drawn on the day' (just a few doodlings...). So the exhibit was rather worth it, I think. :)

I tried to vary things a tad with traditional and digital. Let me know if there's anything else you want to know about the exhibition or pictures.

Quick Animal Paintings 2

Another collage!

Did these last year, with some additions added this year. Apart from the Parasaurolophus, the only pastel work, which was made just a few weeks ago. Like the last, smaller batch, this was just a bit of fun to use up some old paints and scrap paper. Some are far more scruffy than others and the sea creature is probably my favourite. It did make me think of about the processes within painting, though. Yay for art for fun.

Robot Poster

A few cutesy robots I drew late last year - ideas for something which did not come to pass. I decided to show a few here, anyway, as a bit of character design. I made up the silly poster around it to keep the robots together. Monkey robot! :D

You Can't Take Me I'm Free

Another year flies 'round. First post of this year near the end of February - woops!

I meant to post this near the end of last year but I had a similarly coloured picture I was working on alongside it, and so wanted to post them together. Now that other picture has been on the back-burner for a while (will get back to it before long), I think I will just post this before it becomes too irrelevant. (Hello, Neil.)

The whys and who of the piece is for elsewhere, but the basics here: I wanted to try and put more detail into a background because I would like to get better with them. I was inspired by a nice bit of English (Yorkshire) countryside from a photograph I took last year. I also wanted to try some more painterly styles on Photoshop, again to practice. The style also meant I didn't have to worry about going too realistic with it all. Entire thing drawn and 'painted' digitally, with the mouse.
